Obituary for Kent Massie

Kent is the husband of Mary Carr Massie, Manager of McColaugh Funeral Home, Inc. Xenia.

Kent Massie, age 48, lifelong resident of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017.  He was born March 4, 1969, the son of Gary B. and Margie C. (Dalton) Massie, both deceased.

Kent is survived by his wife, Mary R. Carr Massie; 2 sons whom he adored, Dalton and Louis; aunts: Linda Charlene (Bob) Auckerman and Phyllis (Glenn) Pennington; his best friend, whom he considered his brother: Rick Meeks; as well as many cousins and even more friends.

He graduated from Springfield Shawnee High School, Class of 1987. He received his Bachelors in Education from Capital University in 1992. While at Capital, he played Varsity Football all four years proudly wearing the #80. He served as Vice-President of the Kappa Sigma Upsilon Fraternity and was on Capital University’s 1991 Homecoming Court.  Kent obtained his Master’s Degree in Education Administration at the University of Dayton. 

Kent began teaching as an Intervention Specialist at Tecumseh High School in 1992, and was currently the Special Education Department Chair.  He taught Social Studies and ran the "Work-Study Program."  As an educator, Kent was able to encourage students to believe in themselves and through hard work reach their full potential.  During his career at Tecumseh, Kent coached football for over 20 years, winning numerous awards. He was very proud of his team’s accomplishments and formed lasting relationships with his players. He also coached many sports, including baseball, track & field, weight lifting, and speed training. More recently, Kent was excited to be coaching youth sports for his son’s teams, and was undefeated as a flag football coach. Kent was a member of the Miami Valley Coaches Association and various teaching associations. He supported the National Football Foundation and attended St. Bernard Catholic Church. Together with his late father, Kent owned B&G Homebuyers, a real estate investment business.

Kent was a gentle soul, with a giant personality, extremely outgoing and never met a stranger. Although laid back by nature, Kent was particularly passionate and extremely loyal to the Tecumseh Arrows, Clearwater Florida and most importantly, his sons.

A Celebration of Kent’s life will be held Monday at 6 PM in the Tecumseh High School Auditorium, 9830 W. National Rd., New Carlisle, OH 45344.  Gathering for friends and family will be from 2 PM until 6 PM in the Auditorium. Graveside services will be held privately at Ferncliff Cemetery.
