Obituary for Paul A. Vensil

Brother and Brother-in-Law of Carl and Carolyn Vensil, Co-owners of Vensil & Chute Funeral Homes

Paul A. Vensil, 74, of Frazeysburg, Ohio died Friday afternoon, July 22, 2022 at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio as the result of an auto accident sustained earlier in the day.

Paul was born December 30, 1947 in Zanesville, Ohio. He was a son of the late Austin M. and M. Esther (Vroom) Vensil and was a 1965 graduate of Frazeysburg High School. Paul proudly served our country in the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was a life-long farmer and he retired from Rockwell International in Heath, Ohio after 34 years of service. Paul was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at the Mattingly Settlement and was a former member and past president of the Muskingum County National Farmers Organization.

To say that Paul was an active member of the community is an understatement. For over 30 years he served as Jackson Township Trustee where part of his duties were caring for the Frazeysburg Cemetery. In addition to Frazeysburg Cemetery, he was also the sexton at Muskingum Presbyterian Cemetery and Mattingly Settlement Cemetery. Nearly every morning he could be found at one of the local “breakfast clubs”, recently most often McDonald’s in Dresden. He loved flying and had his private pilot license and his own airplane. Paul loved to mow grass around the farm and he was very proud of his sweet corn patch. (Watch out raccoon!)

For well over 10 years Paul has been transporting members of the local Amish community. No matter whether it involved taking a family to Pennsylvania for a wedding or taking a trailer full of horses to a job or to an auction, he was always there to assist. He considered his many Amish friends as family.

Paul loved his community. He always had a smile, he had a tremendous sense of humor, he was always willing to share one of his special hugs, and he was always willing to do a good deed for anyone. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving is his loving wife 53 years, Pamela J. (Vickers) Vensil whom he married March 22, 1969; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Virgil and Wendy Vensil; two daughters and sons-in-law, Monika and Ryan Rushing and Brittni and Ray Rothenstine, all of Frazeysburg; a daughter-in-law, Angie Vensil of Frazeysburg; fifteen grandchildren, Rachael (Derrick), Darcie, Alex (Tony), Courtney, Ashton, Micahla (Winston), Wyatt, Nicolas, Bryce, Tyler, Quincy, Ava, Brooks, Isla, and Jones; ten great-grandchildren, Brodey, Audrey, Carter, Wesley, Gillian, Hadley, Gradey, Vada, Cohen, and Havyn.  Also surviving are two brothers, Lawrence (Phyllis) Vensil of Dresden and Carl (Carolyn) Vensil of Nashport; three sisters, Veronica Hewitt of Newark, Mary Scott of Lewisville, and Alice (Danny) Fulks of Dresden; four sisters-in-law, Pat Blacksten of Utica, Peg Earhart of Zanesville, Polly Priest of Trinway and Penny (Gregg) Marshall of Frazeysburg; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Matthew Shayne Vensil, who died August 29, 1973, and Micah Shayne Vensil who died September 7, 2014; a great-grandson, Vensil Anthony Hutchison who died March 13, 2020; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Virgil and Idamae Vickers and four brothers-in-law, Jim Scott, Larry Blacksten, John Earhart and Randy Priest.

Calling hours will be 2:00pm to 8:00pm Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.

A Service of Eulogy, a time for family and friends to share their love for Paul, will follow the calling hours.  All are welcome to attend and share.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am Thursday, July 28, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 6280 St. Mary’s Road, Nashport with the Reverend Father Ryan Schmit celebrating.  He will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
